Sony Sendai FC

Former JFL club dissolved by Sony in 2024 after 56 years.

Last updated

Sony Sendai FC was a Japanese football club based in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Founded in 1968 by workers at Sony's Sendai factory, the club spent decades in local leagues before a five-year push to reach the former Japan Football League. They achieved that goal in 1997 and later became a steady presence in the newly organized Japan Football League, the fourth tier of Japanese football. After 56 years, Sony announced the club's dissolution on 27 September 2024, effective at the end of the 2024 JFL season, citing restructuring of its recording media business at the Tagajyo site of Sony Storage Media Manufacturing.

History

Sony Sendai FC began in 1968, created by employees at Sony’s factory in Sendai. For many years, the team stayed under the radar, competing mostly in the Miyagi Prefecture League. Everything shifted in 1993, when the club set an ambitious goal: reach the Japan Football League within five years.

Starting in 1994, they won four straight league titles—first in the Prefecture League, then in the Tōhoku Regional League. They made good on their promise in 1997 by winning the Regional League play-off and earning promotion to the JFL. When the J. League Division 2 launched in 1999, Sony Sendai chose not to go professional.

Instead, they joined the newly formed Japan Football League and became a regular fixture there. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami forced the club to skip the first half of that season, with the JFL’s permission. They finished last in points, but avoided relegation because Machida Zelvia and Matsumoto Yamaga moved up to Division 2 and JEF Reserves withdrew. In 2015, Sony Sendai captured its first JFL title by winning the second stage and then beating first-stage champions Vanraure Hachinohe on penalties after a two-leg final ended tied on aggregate.

On September 27, 2024, Sony announced the team would dissolve at the close of the 2024 JFL season, ending 56 years of existence. The Sony Group pointed to restructuring and downsizing in its recording media business, run from the Tagajyo site of Sony Storage Media Manufacturing, as the reason. On October 3, 2024, the JFL Board of Directors unanimously approved Sony Sendai’s withdrawal, confirming the club would leave the league at the end of the year.
