Lieder und Gesänge (Mahler)
Mahler's song collection includes two settings of Don Juan texts.
Lieder und Gesänge is a collection of fourteen songs with piano accompaniment by Gustav Mahler, composed from 1880 to 1889 and published in three booklets in 1892. The title sometimes appears with the addendum aus der Jugendzeit, though this subtitle was not added by Mahler and its meaning is uncertain. The collection draws on texts from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and works by Richard Leander and Tirso de Molina. Two songs, Serenade aus Don Juan and Phantasie aus Don Juan, are based on the Don Juan legend via Tirso de Molina.
