New York Sirens

The New York Sirens are a professional women’s ice hockey team based in the New York metropolitan area and are one of the six original franchises in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). They host their home games at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The Sirens made history by participating in the league’s inaugural contest, a 4–0 shutout win over PWHL Toronto on January 1, 2024.
The franchise was announced on August 29, 2023, as one of the PWHL’s first six charter teams. Pascal Daoust, formerly of the QMJHL’s Val-d’Or Foreurs, was named the team’s first general manager on September 1, and Howie Draper became the first head coach on September 15, taking a leave from his role at the University of Alberta. The team signed its first three players—U.S. national team members Alex Carpenter and Abby Roque, and Canadian national team member Micah Zandee-Hart—on September 8. At the 2023 PWHL Draft on September 18, New York selected defender Ella Shelton fourth overall. The team’s colors were revealed in November 2023 as turquoise, navy blue, and white, and it initially played home games at Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with four games at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. Zandee-Hart was named the first captain on December 21, with Carpenter and Shelton serving as alternate captains.
New York was the first team eliminated from playoff contention on April 24, 2024, but secured the first overall pick in the 2024 draft with a win over PWHL Ottawa on April 30, selecting Princeton’s Sarah Fillier. After the season, the team parted ways with coach Draper and hired Greg Fargo, formerly of Colgate Raiders, in June 2024. On September 13, 2024, the Sirens announced they would play most of their 2024–25 home games at the Prudential Center, which had hosted two games in April 2024, and moved their practice facility to the Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange. On April 4, 2026, the Sirens defeated the Seattle Torrent 2–1 in an overtime shootout at Madison Square Garden, setting a U.S. professional women’s hockey attendance record of 18,006.
During the inaugural season, the team operated without a nickname, simply called PWHL New York, wearing a league-wide jersey with the city’s name diagonally across the front.
