Esther Miriam Zimmer Lederberg was an American microbiologist who helped lay the groundwork for bacterial genetics. She identified the bacterial virus known as lambda phage and the fertility factor F in bacteria, created the first working version of replica plating, and advanced the science of how genes move between bacteria through specialized transduction. She also established and ran the Plasmid Reference Center at Stanford University, which is no longer active. There, she cataloged, named, and distributed many types of plasmids, including those responsible for antibiotic resistance, heavy metal resistance, virulence, conjugation, colicins, transposons, and other elements not yet understood.

Working in a field dominated by men, and as the wife of Nobel Prize winner Joshua Lederberg, she struggled to gain professional recognition. Despite her key discoveries in microbiology, she never received a tenured university position. Her contributions are often left out of textbooks, with her achievements sometimes credited to her husband.

Born Esther Miriam Zimmer in the Bronx, New York, she was the older of two children in an Orthodox Jewish family. Her father, David Zimmer, ran a print shop after immigrating from Romania; her mother was Pauline Geller Zimmer. Her brother Benjamin arrived a year later. Growing up during the Great Depression, her lunch was often just bread with tomato juice squeezed on top. She learned Hebrew and used it to lead Passover seders.

She graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx at age 15 in 1938 and won a scholarship to Hunter College in New York City. Initially interested in French or literature, she switched to biochemistry despite teachers warning that a woman would face a harder career in science. As a research assistant at the New York Botanical Garden, she studied *Neurospora crassa* with plant pathologist Bernard Ogilvie Dodge. She earned a bachelor’s degree in genetics, graduating cum laude in 1942 at age 19.

After Hunter, she worked as a research assistant for Alexander Hollaender at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, later Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, continuing with *N. crassa* and publishing her first genetics paper. In 1944, she won a fellowship to Stanford University, assisting George Wells Beadle and Edward Tatum.
