Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (December 3, 1842 – March 30, 1911) was an American industrial and safety engineer, environmental chemist, and university instructor. Her early work in sanitary engineering and experiments in domestic science helped create the field of home economics. She started the home economics movement, which applied science to household tasks, and was the first person to use chemistry to study nutrition.

Richards finished Westford Academy in 1862. She became the first woman allowed into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1873 and later becoming its first female teacher. She was among the first women in the United States to study at a school of science and technology, and she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College in 1870, though she was not the first American woman to earn a degree in chemistry.

A pragmatic feminist and early ecofeminist, Richards believed women’s domestic work was a key part of the economy. She advanced women’s education, especially in laboratory skills, but did not directly challenge women’s role in the home; instead, she stressed the need for their involvement in domestic science. She founded several organizations and published over 100 articles in her lifetime.

Richards was born in Dunstable, Massachusetts, the only child of Peter Swallow and Fanny Gould Taylor, both from established families of modest means who valued education. She was homeschooled as a child because she was often sick, and her parents feared local schools would expose her to disease. In 1859, the family moved to Westford so she could attend Westford Academy, one of the few co-educational secondary schools at the time. Her father sold the family farm to make this possible. There she studied mathematics, composition, and Latin, and her Latin skills allowed her to learn French and German, rare languages north of New York. She earned money as a tutor, which funded further study.

She left the academy in March 1862, then caught measles in May, delaying her teaching plans. In spring 1863, the family moved to Littleton, Massachusetts, where her father bought a larger store. In June 1864, at age twenty-one, she took a teaching job. In 1865, she spent the year running the family store and caring for her ill mother instead of teaching. During the winter of 1865–66, she studied and attended lectures in Worcester.
