Zoya Akhtar (born 14 October 1972) is an Indian filmmaker known for her work in Hindi cinema and streaming series. The daughter of writer Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, she earned a filmmaking diploma from NYU and gained experience as an assistant to directors Mira Nair, Tony Gerber, and Dev Benegal before stepping into writing and directing. She has won four Filmfare Awards. In 2015, she co-founded the production company Tiger Baby Films with her frequent collaborator Reema Kagti.
Akhtar's first feature as a director was the drama *Luck by Chance* (2009), which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. Her big break came with the comedy-drama *Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara* (2011), winning her the Filmfare Award for Best Director. She went on to direct the comedy-drama *Dil Dhadakne Do* (2015), contributed segments to the anthology films *Lust Stories* (2018) and *Ghost Stories* (2020), and helmed the musical drama *Gully Boy* (2019), which brought her a second Filmfare Award for Best Director. Her work also includes the streaming drama series *Made in Heaven* (2019–2023) and the crime thriller series *Dahaad* (2023).
Akhtar was born to poet-lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar and screenwriter Honey Irani. Her stepmother is actress Shabana Azmi, and her brother is filmmaker and actor Farhan Akhtar. Her great-grandfather, Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, was an Islamic scholar who edited the first collection of Mirza Ghalib's poetry and later played a role in the 1857 Indian Rebellion.
She began her career co-directing a music video for the rock band Pentagram. She worked as a casting director on films like *Split Wide Open* (1999) and *Dil Chahta Hai* (2001), and as an assistant director on her brother's films *Dil Chahta Hai* and *Lakshya* (2004). She later served as an executive producer on Reema Kagti's *Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.* (2007).
Her directorial debut, *Luck by Chance*, starred her brother Farhan and Konkona Sen Sharma, telling the story of a struggling actor. It received strong critical reviews for its concept and screenplay but performed modestly at the box office. She shared the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director with Ayan Mukerji.
