History
José Alberto's grandparents and those of his wife Leonor planted their vineyards in 1920 in Quintana del Pidio. Over generations, the Calvo and Casajús families made wines in traditional cellars. In 1963, the local cooperative "Los Olmos" was founded, and both families were founding and active members until the early 1990s. José Alberto left the cooperative in 1993 to establish his own winery, Bodegas J.A. Calvo Casajús, while continuing to work as a baker. Production of the signature wine NIC, named after his children Nicolás and Catalina, began in 2004. International recognition followed from positive reviews in Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate. In 2013, the winery received the highest scores in Ribera del Duero from critic Neal Martin for that magazine, with NIC 2009 earning 97 points and Casajús Viñedos Antiguos 95 points, drawing international media attention.
