Luglienga

An early-ripening white grape with centuries of European history.

Luglienga, also known as Lignan blanc and Seidentraube, is a white grape variety grown across Europe for both wine and table use. Its documented history reaches back to at least the 14th century in Piedmont, though today it is most often seen as a table grape and used occasionally for home winemaking.

History and relationship to other grapes

The earliest written record of Luglienga appears in 1329 under the synonym Luglienchis, in the Piedmont wine region of northwest Italy. Its name likely derives from the Italian Luglio (July), referencing its early ripening; the French synonym Jouanenc, from juin (June), supports this reputation. DNA analysis in the early 21st century confirmed that Siedentraube and Lignan blanc are the same variety as Luglienga, and that Luglienga shares a parent-offspring relationship with Prié blanc, with Luglienga probably being the parent. In 1929, Luglienga (as Siedentraube) was crossed with Gamay to create the white German wine grape Regner.
