White Wine Grape Varieties from France Codexery

Colombard

A French white grape used for Cognac, Armagnac, and distinctive guava-flavoured wines.

Colombard, also known as French Colombard in North America, is a white wine grape possibly descended from Chenin blanc and Gouais blanc, making it a sibling of Armagnac's Meslier-Saint-François and the nearly extinct Cognac grape Balzac blanc. Traditionally grown in Charentes and Gascony for distilling into Cognac and Armagnac, it remains permitted in Bordeaux wine and in Gascony for Vins de Pays Côtes de Gascogne and white Floc de Gascogne. Its wines are noted for distinctive guava flavours.
