Plot summary

The first half of the season is set in 2060, seven years after season 3, and the second half takes place in 2083, twenty-three years later. Humanity has lost a war against hosts; Charlotte Hale's host copy has taken control of Delos and the world by replacing world leaders with hosts and deploying a bioengineered virus that makes humans susceptible to host commands. This reverses the earlier power dynamic, giving hosts global dominance. Two decades later, Christina, a woman resembling Dolores who writes NPC storylines for a video game company, begins to question reality when her stories appear to affect real people.

She is actually a program created by Charlotte to manage a docile humanity through radio-sonic tones that transmit manufactured storylines directly into human minds. Meanwhile, Bernard Lowe spends two decades simulating realities in the Sublime to find a path to save both hosts and humanity. He and Stubbs then enact that path, discovering a group of human 'outliers' immune to the host virus, and reunite with Maeve, who had been left for dead decades earlier.

Production

HBO renewed Westworld for a fourth season shortly before the season 3 finale in April 2020. Aurora Perrineau joined the cast in a recurring role. Production began in June 2021 at Melody Ranch Studio in Newhall, California, was halted for two days in July due to a positive COVID-19 test, and wrapped in December 2021. A first look at footage appeared in an HBO Max 2022 sizzle reel on December 22, 2021. The season's premiere date of June 26, 2022, was announced when a viral video trailer titled 'It doesn't look like anything to me' was released in May 2022. At the 2022 ATX Television Festival, the tagline 'Adapt or Die' and the return of Teddy Flood were revealed.
