Lore & Background
Speedie joined West Ham United on loan in early March 1993, during a white-knuckle phase of the Division One promotion race. Over the remainder of the season, he made 11 league appearances and scored 4 goals—including a crucial brace against Bristol Rovers—directly fueling the club's finish as Division One runners-up. His gritty hold-up play and relentless pressing helped drag West Ham over the line and back to the Premier League. Despite this success, Speedie was not offered a permanent contract by the club.
