Production

The BBC confirmed in August 2023 that a fourteenth series of Waterloo Road would be made, alongside the thirteenth and fifteenth. An eight-episode run was planned, with filming set to begin later that year. Production took place in a new location for the Waterloo Road Academy, using a former campus of Manchester College. The premiere date was announced in August 2024 as 10 September 2024.

Most of the regular cast from series 13 returned. James Baxter, Jo Coffey, Neil Fitzmaurice, Rachel Leskovac, Kym Marsh, Katherine Pearce, Shauna Shim, and Adam Thomas all reprised their roles as Joe Casey, Wendy Whitwell, Neil Guthrie, Coral Walker, Nicky Walters, Amy Spratt, Valerie Chambers, and Donte Charles. Vincent Jerome did not come back as Lindon King, but Ryan Clayton appeared again as Mike Rutherford in a recurring role.

Several new students joined the school. Olly Rhodes played Billy Savage, Nathan Wood played Boz Osbourne, Sonya Nisa played Aleena Qureshi, Miya Ocego played Lois Taylor-Brown, Danny Murphy played Luca Smith, and Matthew Khan played Jared Jones. Nearly all the pupils from the previous series returned, except for Inathi Rozani, Zanele Nyoni, and Teddy Wallwork, who had played Zayne Jackson, Jess Clarke, and Declan Harding. Returning pupils included Noah Valentine and Summer Violet Bird as Preston and Tonya Walters, with Alicia Ford as their cousin Kelly Jo Rafferty. Liam Scholes, Lucy Eleanor Begg, and Thapelo Ray took on the roles of Noel McManus, Caz Williams, and Dwayne Jackson, Joe’s former foster son. The younger cast featured Hattie Dynevor as Libby Guthrie, Neil’s daughter, Chiamaka Ulebor as Shola Aku, Zak Sutcliffe as troublemaker Schumacher ‘Schuey’ Weever, Maisie Robinson as his sister Portia Weever, Tillie Amartey as Stacey ‘Stace’ Neville, and Aabay Noor Ali as Mollie ‘Mog’ Richardson. Francesco Piacentini-Smith appeared only in the first episode as Dean Weever, Schuey and Portia’s cousin.

Recurring characters from series 13 also came back. Kerry Howard, Tom Wells, Hollie-Jay Bowes, and Marie Critchley reprised their roles as Serena Michelle Davies, Marc Todd, Debs Rafferty, and Barbara Rafferty. In the final episode, former pupils Kai Sharif and Samia Choudhry returned, with Adam Ali and Priyasasha Kumari playing them again. Angela Griffin and Jamie Glover also returned as Kim Campbell and her husband Andrew Treneman.
