Dick Bass (baseball)

Last updated

Richard William Bass was a Major League Baseball pitcher who appeared in one game for the Washington Senators in 1939. Born in rural Tennessee and raised in Rogersville, he attended Miami University in Ohio and was named to the All-Buckeye baseball teams as a junior and senior.

After signing with the St. Louis Cardinals organization, he pitched in the minors for several seasons before making his major league debut at age 33. His only start, against the Cleveland Indians, is preserved in one of the oldest extant baseball play-by-play broadcasts. Following his brief major league career, Bass served in World War II as a purchasing agent in Ohio and later managed amateur and minor league teams, including the Fort Wayne Daisies of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
