During the 2024–25 season, the Capitals became the first team to clinch a playoff spot on March 20, 2025, with a win over the Philadelphia Flyers, securing their second consecutive postseason berth. On April 4, 2025, captain Alexander Ovechkin scored his 894th goal, tying Wayne Gretzky's all-time regular season goals record, and also recorded his 136th game-winning goal, setting a new NHL record for game-winning goals, surpassing Jaromir Jagr. On April 6, Ovechkin scored his 895th regular season goal, breaking Gretzky's record for most goals in the regular season.

The Capitals clinched the Metropolitan Division title on April 8, 2025, for the first time since the 2019–20 season, and clinched the best record in the Eastern Conference on April 10, 2025, for the first time since the 2016–17 season. In the playoffs, the Capitals defeated the Montreal Canadiens in five games in the first round, winning their first playoff series since their 2018 Stanley Cup victory, but were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes in five games in the second round.
