Playing career
Michael Latta started his hockey career in the Ontario Hockey League, playing for the Ottawa 67's and the Guelph Storm. The Nashville Predators selected him in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, 72nd overall. After another season in the OHL, Nashville signed him to a three-year entry-level contract in April 2010. Latta then spent three years with the Predators' top minor league team, the Milwaukee Admirals. At the 2013 trade deadline, Nashville sent Latta and Martin Erat to the Washington Capitals in exchange for prospect Filip Forsberg. He made his NHL debut with Washington during the 2013-14 season and scored his first NHL goal on November 15, 2013, against the Detroit Red Wings.
When the Capitals chose not to keep him, Latta signed a one-year free agent deal with the Los Angeles Kings on July 1, 2016. After training camp, he was sent down to the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, where he put up 6 points in 29 games. Without ever playing for Los Angeles, he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on January 21, 2017, for Cameron Schilling. He finished that season with the Blackhawks' AHL team, the Rockford IceHogs, scoring 16 points in 32 games. As a restricted free agent, Chicago did not give him a qualifying offer, making him a free agent on June 26, 2017. A week later, he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes. In December, Arizona traded him to the New Jersey Devils for Ryan Kujawinski.
Leaving New Jersey as a free agent, Latta signed a one-year contract with Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League in July 2018. After that contract ended, he was a free agent until November 2019, when he agreed to a one-year deal with Färjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League.
