Playing career
Declan Chisholm began his major junior career when the Peterborough Petes picked him in the second round, 24th overall, of the 2016 OHL Priority Selection. Over four seasons in the OHL, he posted career-best numbers in his final year with 13 goals, 56 assists, and 69 points, leading all Petes defensemen in scoring. The Winnipeg Jets selected him in the fifth round, 150th overall, of the 2018 NHL entry draft, and he inked a three-year entry-level contract on June 1, 2020. He made his pro debut on February 22, 2021, with the Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate. With the Jets hit hard by COVID-19 absences, Chisholm earned his first NHL call-up and made his debut on January 13, 2022, one day after turning 22. At the time, he had six goals and 14 points with Manitoba, and he skated alongside Nate Schmidt in a 3-0 shutout win over the Detroit Red Wings. During the 2023-24 season, after appearing in only two games with the Jets and mostly serving as a healthy scratch, he was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Wild on January 29, 2024. On June 28, 2025, at the 2025 NHL entry draft, the Wild traded Chisholm, a pending restricted free agent, along with a sixth-round pick to the Washington Capitals for Chase Priskie and a fourth-round pick. He signed a two-year, $3.2 million contract extension with the Capitals on July 1, 2025. Chisholm made his Capitals debut on October 12, 2025, which also marked his 100th career NHL game. Unable to lock down a regular spot on Washington’s blue line, he played a depth role and recorded one goal and seven points in 26 games. After just one season with the Capitals, he was traded to the New Jersey Devils on June 25, 2026, in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 draft.
