Warhammer Vermintide Codexery

The King

The Empire's crown is forged in steel, and its Emperor wields it.

Karl Franz, the Emperor of the Empire, is the most politically and symbolically significant figure in the Warhammer world. In Warhammer: Vermintide 2, he steps out of the throne room and into the mud as a fully playable melee hero, bringing the weight of the Empire's banner onto the battlefield alongside the player's party. He is the Empire's face, its shield, and its sword all at once.

Lore & Background

Karl Franz ascended to the Imperial throne in a world already scarred by war, plague, and the slow rot of Skaven incursion. As Emperor, he is the political heart of the Empire, the figurehead around whom the disparate kingdoms and city-states cohere. In the broader Warhammer Fantasy setting, his reign is defined by diplomacy, the balance of power between the Great Powers, and the ever-present threat of the Skaven under the Claw. He is a man of duty more than of glory, bound to a throne that demands more of him than any sword ever could. Vermintide 2, however, strips away the courtly distance. His hero kit in the game reflects a warrior who leads from the front—bracing blows with a shield, driving a heavy sword through Skaven ranks, and absorbing punishment so that his allies can press the attack. The player experiences him not as a distant symbol but as a battered, determined man who refuses to let the Empire fall while he still draws breath. His relationship to the other heroes is one of command and solidarity. He does not micromanage; he stands beside them. In the campaign's narrative, his presence elevates the stakes: this is not merely a band of adventurers clearing a dungeon. The fate of an entire civilization rides on their shoulders, and its Emperor is among them.

Reader's Guide

He wields a sword and a shield, giving him a defensive posture that lets him absorb hits and create space for his party. His playstyle rewards positioning: he is strongest when he is between the enemy and his allies. His heavy shield bash can stagger a Stormvermin mid-swing, buying your team a precious second to reposition or reload. Time your pushes to interrupt packmaster grabs or gutter runner pounces—your block is a lifeline, not just a shield. When the horde closes in, hold your ground; every second they spend bouncing off your guard is a second your elf or wizard can thin their ranks.
