The Sugarhill Gang, an old-school hip-hop trio from Englewood, New Jersey, came together in 1979. That same year, they released "Rapper's Delight," which became the first rap single to crack the Billboard Hot 100's top 40, peaking at number 36 in January 1980. Though this was their only U.S. hit, the group found continued success in Europe into the mid-1980s. They reunited in 1994 and launched a world tour in 2016. Recognized as pioneers of hip-hop, their style blended rapping with samples from disco, funk, and soul, helping to shape electro and East Coast hip-hop.
The original members—Henry "Big Bank Hank" Jackson, Michael "Wonder Mike" Wright, and Guy "Master Gee" O'Brien—were all from Englewood. Producer Sylvia Robinson assembled them into a group and founded Sugar Hill Records with her husband, Joe Robinson, naming both the label and the act after Harlem's Sugar Hill neighborhood. After "Rapper's Delight," the trio never scored another top 40 U.S. hit, but they released European favorites like "8th Wonder" (performed on *Soul Train* in 1981), "Rapper's Reprise (Jam Jam)," and "Showdown" with the Furious Five. The group gradually wound down but never formally disbanded.
In 1990, they briefly reunited for the "RapMania: The Roots of Rap" concert at New York's Apollo Theater. The original members reunited in 1994 for a tour. The group released a children's hip-hop album, *Jump On It!*, in 1999. O'Brien did not rejoin, and at some point, Robinson began performing under O'Brien's stage name "Master Gee," frustrating both O'Brien and Wright—who had tried to convince Robinson not to use it. Robinson later trademarked both "Master Gee" and "Wonder Mike," prompting O'Brien and Wright to take legal action to reclaim their names. Wright left the group in 2005 with producer Henry "Hen Dogg" Williams, and the two reunited with O'Brien to perform as "Rapper's Delight Featuring Wonder Mike and Master Gee," while Joey Robinson continued performing with Jackson as the Sugarhill Gang, with the label claiming copyright to that name.
After regaining the rights to "Sugarhill Gang," the group released "Lala Song" with French DJ Bob Sinclar in 2009. Jackson died on November 11, 2014, at age 58 after a long battle with cancer. In 2016, Wright and O'Brien embarked on their first world tour in over a decade as the Sugarhill Gang,
