Gameplay
In Taiwan Love Story⁵, you play as David Lee, a Taiwanese-American college student in Taiwan. Each game spans a full year, starting and ending on Valentine’s Day, with each round covering one week. Your aim is to win the heart of one of five heroines by raising her affection to a maximum of 8. This requires setting up dates and boosting David’s power and money. Power grows through buying items, while money comes from writing a thesis or making deliveries. These ability improvements carry over into future playthroughs. Date activities include playing claw machines, shooting balloons, watching movies, and exploring special spots. You can date multiple heroines over the year, but only one ending can be chosen per game.
Plot
David Lee, a Taiwanese-American student, studies humanities psychology at a university in Taiwan and assists a well-known professor with research on how relationships develop. For this project, he encounters five female characters at a campsite, searching for the one who kissed him in a dream. His friend Ryan Yang, an avid VTuber enthusiast, mistakes David for his favorite VTuber at that same campsite and kisses him. When a video of the kiss circulates, classmates wrongly assume Ryan has romantic feelings for David. Ryan ends up single and, on Valentine’s Day, harasses David upon learning David has a girlfriend. Eventually, Ryan becomes friends with a policewoman who looked into his behavior. Amy Lin works as an honest but clumsy insurance broker in Taipei’s Eastern District. David joins her company to lend a hand, and after Amy starts following his advice to contact clients in nightclubs, they argue when David learns she faced sexual harassment there. David stops an attempted rape, urges her to change her work methods, and they share a night together at a hotel near Taipei 101. Amy’s career then picks up, and her storyline concludes at the campsite where they first met. During development, two designs for Amy were considered: one slimmer and one more curvaceous. Producer Siupong favored the curvier look but chose the slimmer draft to match her office lady style. Siupong has said Amy is his favorite character in the game.
Development
In August 2023, the studio behind Waifu Fighter, HappyMonster and SlothGamer, revealed they were working on a new project called Taiwan Love Story⁵, with Siupong serving as producer. Siupong, who is from Hong Kong but lives in Taiwan, said his unique position helps him notice things about Taiwan that foreigners find intriguing but locals might take for granted. He believes that highlighting these details with a fresh angle makes it easier to share local culture with international audiences. The team did a lot of research for this purpose. The game is aimed at players from abroad who do not know much about Taiwan, and it draws inspiration from Taiwanese TV dramas and online games, including its theme song I Want to Say I Love You Loudly. Siupong designed drafts for four of the heroines in 2023, while the fifth, Amanda Zhang, had her design released in May 2024. A demo was shown at G-EIGHT in December 2023. On July 26, 2024, LewdLoco and Mango Party announced the game would launch on December 19, 2024, with adult content available as a free DLC. Another demo appeared at Tokyo Game Show in September 2024. The game came out on schedule. A Japanese dub was announced on March 4, 2025, and a spin-off novel and setting book were announced on June 24.
