Human papillomavirus infection, or HPV, is caused by a DNA virus belonging to the Papillomaviridae family. Most HPV infections produce no symptoms, and about 90% clear up on their own within two years. If an infection lingers, it can lead to warts or precancerous lesions, which raise the risk of cancers in the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, anus, mouth, tonsils, or throat. Nearly all cervical cancer cases are linked to HPV, with two strains—HPV16 and HPV18—causing 70% of them. HPV16 is behind almost 90% of HPV-related cancers of the mouth, throat, or tonsils.
