Villarreal CF B, founded in 1999, is the reserve side of Villarreal CF. Based in the Valencian town of Villarreal, the team plays its home matches at the Estadio de la Cerámica, which seats 23,008 spectators.
In Spain, reserve teams compete within the same league system as their senior clubs, unlike in England where they play in separate leagues. However, a reserve team cannot be promoted to the division where its main team plays. If the senior side is relegated to the division the B team occupied the previous season—as happened in 2011–12—the reserve team is automatically moved down one tier. Reserve teams are also barred from entering the Copa del Rey.
Villarreal B took part in the Premier League International Cup, an England-based under-23 tournament, for the 2014–15, 2015–16, and 2016–17 editions. The team won the competition in 2016, defeating PSV in the final. Most of the players fielded in that tournament came from the B side, with some additions from the C team and the Juvenil group.
Over its history, the club has spent five seasons in the Segunda División, four in the Primera Federación/Primera División RFEF, eleven in the Segunda División B, four in the Tercera División, and four in the Categorías Regionales.

Unlike in other nations such as England, reserve teams in Spain play in the same football pyramid as their senior team rather than a separate league. However, reserve teams cannot play in the same division as their senior team. Therefore, the team is ineligible for promotion to the division in which the main side plays. Also, if the main team is relegated to the division in which its reserve side played in the prior season (which happened in 2011–12), the reserve team is automatically relegated to the division below the main team. Reserve teams are also no longer permitted to enter the Copa del Rey.
