Before the battle the Vikings are camped on the far side of Southwark Island outside London. The battle ends in a decisive Viking victory; despite the win, Leif and Liv are heartbroken over the deaths of their friends Njal, Skarde and Tomas. In history, a skaldic poem describes the destruction of London Bridge in 1014 by Olaf II Haraldsson, and the bridge is mentioned again in 1016 by chroniclers during King Cnut's war against King Edmund II.
