Senua's Saga: Hellblade II

In this third-person action-adventure title, players advance through puzzles and runes while exploring Senua's psychological state, continuing themes and mechanics from the earlier game.[1] Combat and exploration are influenced by realistic physics and weather systems that change dynamically.[1]

Making and release

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II was developed by Ninja Theory, the creators of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.[2] The studio expanded from about twenty people on the first game to around one hundred workers, with approximately eighty working on Senua's Saga.[2][3] The game was announced on 13 December 2019 during The Game Awards 2019, marking the first Xbox Series X/S console exclusive announced.[4] It launched on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service and is playable on Xbox Cloud Gaming.[5]

Microsoft's 2018 purchase of Ninja Theory made the developer part of Xbox Game Studios.[2] Windows and Xbox Series X/S users could play Senua's Saga starting May 21, 2024.[5][3] In May 2025, marking one year since launch, Ninja Theory revealed a PlayStation 5 version would arrive in summer with added features and optimizations.[6] On August 12, 2025, the PlayStation 5 edition came out, and a complimentary update for Windows and Xbox Series X/S users was also made available.[6]

Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews described Senua's Saga as "an experience of cinematic immersion."[3] Matthews stated the intent was to "make it as easy as possible for players to suspend their disbelief and sink into Senua's world."[3] The developers used over 370 photogrammetry assets in Hellblade 2, compared to only one in the first game.[3] The studio enlisted the experimental folk band Heilung on the soundtrack.[7][8]

Attwell states that the studio drew inspiration from Robert Eggers' commitment to historical accuracy in his filmmaking.[7] The development team employed binaural recording to simulate auditory hallucinations, just as they did in the earlier game.[7]
