Reception

Electronic Gaming Monthly praised the Game Gear version's graphics as nearly identical to those of the Genesis and Super NES versions, but dismissed the game for poor controls, noting that punching enemies becomes a delayed sequence that continues after the enemy is dead. GamePro gave a negative review, calling the graphics technically impressive but dull due to few onscreen objects and uninteresting backgrounds, and concluded that sluggish gameplay, mediocre graphics, and weak sounds hurt the cartridge. GamePro panned the Super NES version as the worst of the Super NES Batman games, criticizing the training mode's lack of a decent fighting game's winning elements, and in normal mode cited frustrating difficulty, the absence of continues, and a time limit in the third stage, while noting that digitized sprites clash with washed-out backgrounds. Next Generation gave one out of five stars, citing boring gameplay and poor controls. Frank Snyder of Computer Game Review wrote that playing the game was not much better than watching the movie. Batman Forever was a major commercial failure.
