Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific

A World War II submarine simulation set in the Pacific theater.

Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific

Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific (released in the United States as Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific) is a World War II submarine simulation for Windows, created by Ubisoft Bucharest and published by Ubisoft in 2007. Players command a U.S. Navy submarine in the Pacific theater, with options for career mode, single war patrols, and single battle engagements. An expansion pack, The U-Boat Missions, followed in 2008.

The game uses detailed 3D graphics to create an immersive World War II submarine environment, with largely functional vessel systems that expose players to many aspects of period submarine warfare. Players can adjust the realism and challenge level, making it easy for newcomers to learn basic gameplay while allowing experienced users to manually control crew management, torpedo allocation, radar, sonar, and target trigonometry.

Like its predecessor Silent Hunter 3, the simulation includes a dynamic campaign with varied mission objectives and unique rewards, aiming to make each playthrough distinct. Major Pacific naval battles, such as the Battle of Midway, are recreated and announced via in-game radio messages. Unlike the earlier game, missions are more specific and diverse, including rescues, reconnaissance, and agent insertions, rather than simply assigning a patrol area.

Multiplayer was available until Ubisoft shut down the servers in 2013. It offered an online adversarial mode where players could command Japanese destroyers against U.S. submarines. Servers supported up to eight players and offered both scripted and generated missions.

The game received "generally favorable reviews" according to Metacritic. Due to concerns about the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 and U.S. federal laws regarding depictions of the Medal of Honor at the time, the original release awarded players fictional decorations that did not resemble actual U.S. military awards. This drew heavy criticism, leading to mods that replaced them with real decorations. The original shelf version was never updated, and all versions, including those on Steam, still display fictional awards.

The U-Boat Missions add-on was announced on October 31, 2007, released in Europe on February 29, 2008, and in North America on March 24, 2008.

Lore & Background

Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific is a submarine simulation that places the player in command of a U.S. Navy submarine during World War II in the Pacific theater. The simulation uses detailed and accurate 3D graphics to immerse the player in the environment of a World War II submarine. The systems of the vessel are largely functional, and the player is exposed to many aspects of submarine warfare of the time. The game allows the player to choose how realistic and challenging the experience is, designed to let new players easily master basic gameplay while allowing experienced users to manually control systems such as crew management, torpedo allocation, radar, sonar, and target trigonometry.

Like its predecessor Silent Hunter 3, the simulation features a dynamic campaign. The game gives players various mission objectives and unique rewards, attempting to make each campaign a unique experience. Major naval battles of the war in the Pacific, such as the Battle of Midway, are re-enacted and players are informed of them by in-game radio messages. Unlike the earlier title, the game gives more specific and varied mission objectives during the campaign—including rescues, reconnaissance, and agent insertions—rather than just assigning a specific patrol area.

An expansion pack, The U-Boat Missions, was released in 2008, focusing on the German U-boat campaign in the Indian Ocean (the Monsun Gruppe). It features new strategic elements, new playable submarines, an improved navigation map, and an improved upgrade system. A Gold Edition including the main game and the expansion pack was released on October 11, 2008.

Reader's Guide

Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific received 'generally favorable reviews' according to video game review aggregator Metacritic. Its significance lies in its detailed simulation of World War II submarine warfare in the Pacific, offering a dynamic campaign with varied mission objectives such as rescues, reconnaissance, and agent insertions. The game's legacy includes a notable controversy: due to concerns relating to the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 and U.S. federal laws regarding depictions of the Medal of Honor at the time, the original release awarded players with fictional decorations that in no way resembled actual United States military awards. This drew heavy criticism from many players, leading to several mods that altered the game to display actual United States decorations. The original 'shelf version' was never updated, and all game versions, including those downloadable on Steam, continue to depict fictional awards. The game also featured an online adversarial multiplayer mode until Ubisoft shut down the servers in 2013, allowing players to command Japanese destroyers against US submarines. The expansion pack, The U-Boat Missions, added a German campaign with strategic support features such as scout planes, available only for that campaign.
