Gameplay and plot

The single-player story mode adapts the first season of the anime and the film Mugen Train, following Tanjiro Kamado as he joins the Demon Slayer Corps to find a cure for his demon-turned sister Nezuko. It includes exploration elements, cutscenes, and boss battles against demons from the series. A versus mode lets players form teams of two fighters from the roster to battle CPU or other players locally or online. The game launched with 18 characters, including six from the spin-off Junior High and High School!!! Kimetsu Academy Story, who share movesets with main-story counterparts but have different outfits and ultimate attacks. Six characters were added via free updates and seven as downloadable content, totaling 31.

Development

Announced in March 2020, the game was initially set for PlayStation 4 by Aniplex, which had produced the 2019 anime. First footage appeared later that month, revealing CyberConnect2 as developer and the Japanese title Kimetsu no Yaiba Hinokami Keppūtan. It was later re-announced as a multiplatform arena fighting game for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S via Weekly Shōnen Jump. Ufotable, the anime's animation studio, produced key illustrations. Three free post-launch DLC packs each added two characters; the first, released in November 2021, introduced Akaza and Rui as the first playable antagonists. A paid Additional Character Pack in 2022 added seven characters from the Entertainment District Arc, though that arc was not included in story mode.

Reception

The game received mixed or average reviews on most platforms according to Metacritic, with the Xbox Series X/S version garnering generally favorable reviews. In Japan, the PlayStation 4 version was the bestselling retail game in its first week with 94,849 physical copies, while the PlayStation 5 version sold 20,187 copies that same week, ranking second. By December 2021, worldwide sales exceeded 1.32 million copies, rising to over 3 million by March 2023, over 3.5 million by February 2024, and later reported at 4 million by Sega. It was nominated for Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2021.
