Veneralia

Roman festival honoring Venus Verticordia and Fortuna Virilis.

The Veneralia was an ancient Roman festival celebrated on April 1, the Kalends of Aprilis, in honor of Venus Verticordia and Fortuna Virilis. Venus Verticordia, whose cult was established in 220 BC, was meant to persuade Romans to cherish traditional sexual proprieties. During the festival, her cult image was taken to the men's baths, undressed, washed in warm water, and garlanded with myrtle by female attendants. Women and men asked both goddesses for help in affairs of the heart, sex, betrothal, and marriage.
