Andersson was born in Malmö, Sweden, and made his professional debut with his local team Malmö Redhawks in the HockeyAllsvenskan, recording 11 points in 38 games in 2012–13 and 13 points in 43 games the following season. He then moved to North America to play a major junior season with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League before being selected by the Calgary Flames in the 2015 NHL entry draft. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Flames on 15 September 2015.

Andersson began his North American professional career with the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League in 2016–17, recording 22 points in 54 games.
