Froese began his professional career after being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009. He spent most of his entry-level contract in the AHL and ECHL, notably helping the Cincinnati Cyclones reach the Kelly Cup finals in 2014. After signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2015, he made his NHL debut on October 24, 2015, and scored his first NHL goal on December 19, 2015. He earned praise for his defensive play during his rookie season.

Froese was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2017 and later signed with the Montreal Canadiens, where he served as captain of their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket. He set career NHL highs in goals and points during the 2017–18 season. After stints with the Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames, he signed a two-year contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2022.
