Schmid played most of his youth and junior hockey in the SCL Tigers system, appearing in just one National League game (a relegation match in 2018). After being drafted by the Devils, he moved to North America for the 2018–19 season and played three seasons in the USHL for the Omaha Lancers and Sioux City Musketeers. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with New Jersey on 17 May 2021 and made his NHL debut on 11 December 2021 in a 4–2 loss to the New York Islanders, becoming the first goaltender to debut in the NHL directly from the USHL.

During the 2022–23 season, Schmid collected his first career NHL win on 10 November 2022 in a 4–3 overtime victory against the Ottawa Senators, and his first NHL shutout on 25 February 2023 in a 7–0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. In the first round of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, he started game three after starter Vítek Vaněček gave up nine goals in the first two games, earning the win and then shutting out the Rangers in games five and seven to secure the series. On 29 June 2024, Schmid and Alexander Holtz were traded to the Vegas Golden Knights for Paul Cotter and a third-round pick in 2025. After not receiving a qualifying offer from Vegas, he became an unrestricted free agent but signed a two-year contract on 3 July. He was reassigned to the AHL's Henderson Silver Knights on 2 October as the third-string goaltender behind Adin Hill and Ilya Samsonov, then recalled on 2 November after a Samsonov injury. He made his Vegas debut on 11 November in relief of Hill, stopping all 12 shots faced. After another recall in March 2025, he made his first start for Vegas on 6 April, stopping 21 of 23 shots in a 3–2 overtime win over the Calgary Flames. He made his playoff debut for Vegas on 24 April, entering in relief of Hill and stopping all nine shots in a 5–2 first-round game 3 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

Entering the 2025–26 season as Hill's full-time backup, Schmid took over as starter in late October after Hill suffered a lower-body injury. He recorded his first shutout with Vegas on 4 November 2025, stopping all 24 shots in a 1–0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. On 29 June 2026, Schmid was traded to the Florida Panthers for a 2028 third-round pick, and as a restricted free agent signed a two-year, $4 million contract extension on 24 July 2026. He also represented Switzerland at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, winning a silver medal and recording a 15-save shutout in his first start against Great Britain.
