Playing career
Sergei Shirokov began his hockey career with HC CSKA Moscow, taking part in the 2000 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as a youth. He moved up through CSKA's system, playing in the Russian First League with their second-tier team starting in 2001. After several seasons there, he joined CSKA's senior squad in the Russian Superleague for the 2004–05 campaign, failing to score in eight appearances. The next season, he notched 14 points over 39 Superleague games.
The Vancouver Canucks selected him 163rd overall in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL draft, a pick they had acquired from the Florida Panthers. Shirokov remained with CSKA, and in the 2008–09 Kontinental Hockey League season, he posted a team-leading and personal-best 40 points in 56 games. He declined a tax-free $500,000 offer to stay in the KHL, instead signing a two-year, two-way $1.75 million contract with the Canucks on August 17, 2009. During pre-season, a knee injury sidelined him for a week, but he recovered to lead the Canucks in exhibition scoring with seven points in four games.
That performance earned him a spot on the opening-night roster for 2009–10, ahead of prospects Cody Hodgson and Michael Grabner.
International play
Shirokov made his international debut with Russia at the 2003 U-18 Junior World Cup, earning a silver medal with four points in five games. He helped Russia to best records at the 2003 Four Nations and 2004 Five Nations Tournaments. At the 2004 IIHF World U18 Championships in Minsk, Belarus, he contributed two goals in six games as Russia defeated the United States 3–2 in the final for a gold medal. Moving to the under-20 team in September 2004, he posted the second-best record at the Four Nations Tournament.
At the 2005 World Junior Championships in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he scored eight points in six games, helping Russia to a silver medal after losing to Canada in the final. In April 2005, he recorded an assist in two games at the Big Prize Tournament in St. Petersburg as Russia posted the best record. At the 2006 World Junior Championships in British Columbia, he scored five points in six games, earning a second consecutive silver medal after another loss to Canada.
He scored a goal and an assist in the gold-medal match against Finland at the 2014 tournament. He won a silver medal at the 2015 IIHF World Championship. He was a member of the Olympic Athletes from Russia team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, helping them win the gold medal.
