Påhlsson began his professional career in Sweden with Modo Hockey, where he played alongside Daniel and Henrik Sedin. He was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 1996 but never played for them, instead being traded to the Boston Bruins in 2000. After a brief stint in Boston, he was traded to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, where he became a key defensive forward. He reached the Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim in 2003 and again in 2007, winning the Cup in 2007 while playing on a checking line with Travis Moen and Rob Niedermayer. During the 2004–05 lockout, he returned to Sweden to play for Frölunda HC, winning an Elitserien championship and playing on a line with P. J. Axelsson and Daniel Alfredsson. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009 and later signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 2012, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks, scoring his first goal as a Canuck on March 8, a game-winner against the Winnipeg Jets. After the season, he returned to Sweden to captain Modo Hockey, though a torn Achilles tendon limited his play. He retired in 2015.
