Bowey began his junior career with the Kelowna Rockets, selected in the second round of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. He emerged as a key two-way defenceman, posting 12 goals and 30 points in 69 games during the 2012–13 WHL season with a +41 rating, ranking thirteenth among WHL players in plus-minus. He helped lead the Rockets to a division title and a seven-game first-round playoff victory before falling to the Kamloops Blazers. In the 2013–14 season, he scored 25 points in his first 25 games, further demonstrating his development.

Bowey signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals in April 2014. He later signed with the Montreal Canadiens, played in the KHL for Dinamo Minsk, Traktor Chelyabinsk, and Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, and returned to North America with the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL before signing with Augsburger Panther in July 2025.
