Eriksson began playing hockey at a young age with Lerums BK, and by age 11 he was already playing with the older under-16 team. His talent was recognized by coach Joshua Clemas at various tournaments, leading him to the junior team for Frölunda HC. He started his professional career in the top-tier Elitserien with Frölunda, where he won Rookie of the Year honours in 2004 and helped the team win the Swedish championship in 2005. Drafted by the Dallas Stars in 2003, Eriksson moved to North America in 2005 and made his NHL debut on 4 October 2006, scoring his first goal in that game. He had a breakout season in 2008–09, leading the Stars with 36 goals, and signed a six-year, $25.5 million contract extension in 2009. On 1 July 2016, Eriksson signed a six-year, $36 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in March 2017 and had disappointing seasons in Vancouver, with 11 goals in 2016–17, 23 points in 2017–18, and 29 points in 2018–19. He was placed on waivers in February 2021. In July 2021, he was traded to the Arizona Coyotes as part of a large package. He played his 1000th NHL game on 6 December 2021 against the Dallas Stars. After a failed attempt to sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins in late August 2023, Eriksson returned to Frölunda on 10 November 2022, marking his return to the SHL after 17 years in North America. He announced his retirement from professional hockey on 10 February 2025 via an Instagram statement.
