Career
McIver began his junior career after being picked in the second round of the OHL Priority Draft, spending three seasons with the Toronto St. Michael's Majors and carving out a reputation as a defensive-minded blueliner. In his final year with the club, he put up 26 points and earned a spot on the OHL's Third All-Star Team. The Vancouver Canucks selected him 254th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, and he turned pro in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose during the 2005–06 season. That same year, an injury call-up gave him his first taste of NHL action with the Canucks. More injuries on Vancouver's defense in 2007–08 led to increased playing time, and he suited up for 17 games that season.
During the 2008–09 preseason, the Canucks tried to send him back to the Moose, but he had to clear waivers first. The Anaheim Ducks claimed him, and he made his Ducks debut on October 14, 2008, picking up his first NHL point—an assist against the Los Angeles Kings. After 18 games with Anaheim, he was traded back to Vancouver on February 4, 2009, in exchange for right winger Mike Brown. He finished that season with the Moose, then became a free agent over the summer. The Canucks re-signed him to a one-year, two-way deal worth $577,000 at the NHL level and $95,000 in the minors.
On July 3, 2010, McIver left Vancouver and signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Boston Bruins organization. When NHL interest dried up, he took a tryout with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs for the 2013–14 season and signed an AHL contract with them on December 13, 2013, to play out the year. The Bulldogs let him go, and on September 12, 2014, the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL signed him. On July 23, 2015, he inked his first overseas deal, a one-year contract with the Braehead Clan of Scotland's Elite Ice Hockey League. He retired after that contract ended in 2016.
McIver moved into coaching on July 19, 2016, when the Oshawa Generals of the OHL hired him as an assistant coach. In 2021, he took the same role with the Newfoundland Growlers, the ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs. On July 4, 2023, he joined the Belleville Senators coaching staff.
