Playing career

As a kid, Jesse Bélanger played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in both 1981 and 1982, representing a minor team from Saint-Georges, Quebec. He put up big numbers in junior hockey with the Granby Bisons, twice surpassing 100 points in a season, but no NHL team picked him in the entry draft. Instead, he signed as a free agent with the Montreal Canadiens in 1990 and immediately proved his worth by racking up 98 points for their AHL affiliate in Fredericton.

Bélanger spent three years in the Canadiens’ system, but breaking into a deep, talented lineup proved tough. He got a brief call-up for four games in 1991–92, then a longer look in 1992–93, appearing in 19 games and notching his first four NHL goals along with two assists. He made the playoff roster that spring, playing nine games as Montreal captured its 24th Stanley Cup.

His real chance came the following summer when the Canadiens left him unprotected in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft, and the Florida Panthers scooped him up. Given regular ice time, Bélanger delivered a strong 1993–94 season with 17 goals and a team-best 33 assists for 50 points, earning NHL Player of the Week honors in January 1994. He followed that up with another solid year in the lockout-shortened 1994–95 campaign, leading the Panthers with 15 goals and 29 points in 47 games.

In 1995–96, Bélanger was still among Florida’s top scorers when the Panthers traded him to the Vancouver Canucks at the deadline. He finished the season with a career-high 20 goals and 42 points overall, but he struggled to fit in with Vancouver and was a healthy scratch during the playoffs.

After Vancouver let him go, Bélanger signed with the Edmonton Oilers for 1996–97, but he couldn’t earn a regular spot and played only six games. That kicked off a five-year stretch where he bounced between organizations and spent most of his time in the minors, with only brief NHL stints. The highlight came during a return to Montreal in 1999–2000, where he played well in 16 games, scoring three goals and nine points. A pointless 12-game run with the New York Islanders in 2000–01 essentially ended his NHL career.
