Playing career
Darren Langdon’s professional hockey career started in the ECHL with the Dayton Bombers, where he set the league’s single-season record for penalty minutes. He moved up to the AHL with the Binghamton Rangers, the New York Rangers’ top affiliate. Over 521 NHL games, Langdon scored 16 goals and added 23 assists for 39 points, while piling up 1,251 penalty minutes—more than half of those from fighting majors. He suited up for five NHL teams: the Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, Carolina Hurricanes, and Vancouver Canucks. His teammates voted him the Rangers’ Players’ Player Award in both 1996 and 1997. After eight seasons in senior hockey, Langdon retired as a player at age 43 and became head coach of the Corner Brook Royals. He also played for the Deer Lake Red Wings of the WCSHL and spent one season with the Summerside Western Capitals in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, he both played for and coached Deer Lake, helping the club win the Herder Memorial Trophy. In 2015, he was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame. While with the Rangers, Langdon often served as an enforcer for star Wayne Gretzky. Known as a second-half fighter, he would typically evade the first 10 to 15 punches before unleashing his own. His notable scraps include a four-fight rivalry with Toronto’s Tie Domi, two bouts with Bob Probert, and four fights with Zdeno Chára.
