Playing career

Byron Ritchie got his start in the 1990 and 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments, suiting up for a minor team from North Delta. The Hartford Whalers picked him in the seventh round, 165th overall, from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 1995 NHL entry draft. He earned a spot on the Western Hockey League East Second All-Star Team in both 1996 and 1997.

On May 13, 1997, after a Memorial Cup game officiated by a French-speaking referee from Quebec, an RDS camera caught Ritchie shouting, "Fuck you, you fucking Frogs! Fuck them all!" The next day at practice, he apologized, saying, "Whether the camera was on me or not doesn't make it right." For the rest of the tournament in Hull, Quebec, fans booed him relentlessly.

When the Whalers moved to North Carolina in 1997, Ritchie’s rights went to the Carolina Hurricanes. He made his NHL debut on December 21, 1998, against the Buffalo Sabres. On October 26, 2001, he set a Lowell Lock Monsters franchise record by racking up six points in one game—two goals and four assists. That performance earned him the American Hockey League Player of the Week honor on October 29, 2001.

On January 16, 2002, the Hurricanes traded Ritchie and Sandis Ozolinsh to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Bret Hedican, Tomas Malec, Kevyn Adams, and a conditional second-round pick in the 2003 NHL entry draft. He signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Calgary Flames on July 4, 2004. Three years later, on July 2, 2007, he inked a deal with the Vancouver Canucks, spending one season there.

After the Canucks decided not to bring him back, Ritchie headed to Europe, signing a one-year contract with Geneve-Servette HC of the NLA. He had a strong season in Switzerland, putting up 60 points and finishing fifth in the league’s scoring race. As a free agent again, he chose to join Dinamo Minsk of the Russian KHL. Injuries limited him to just 12 games in the 2009–10 season, during which he scored three goals.
