Early life

Bains was born to a Punjabi Canadian Sikh family in Surrey, British Columbia. His parents had immigrated from Punjab, India, in 1982. He learned to skate in Newton, Surrey, and later moved to Cloverdale, Surrey. Playing mini-sticks and road hockey with his older brothers led him to ice hockey in the Surrey Minor Hockey League. Growing up in Metro Vancouver, he was a lifelong fan of the Vancouver Canucks. He played AAA hockey with the Burnaby Winter Club Bruins and was part of the BC Junior Canucks at the 2011 Brick Hockey Invitational. In 2012, he was the top scorer in the Bell Capital Cup while leading the Bruins to a championship. He then attended Delta Hockey Academy, playing on their U15 Prep team. After being passed over in the WHL Draft, he attended Red Deer Rebels rookie camp but did not make the team. He played one season with the Vancouver North East Chiefs U18 AAA team in 2016–17, then attended Rebels training camp again but was returned to the Valley West Hawks of the BC Hockey Major Midget League.

Playing career

In 2017, Bains was placed on the Red Deer Rebels' 50-player protected list. After 22 games with the Valley West Hawks, where he had 56 points and was named BCMML Player of the Month for November, he joined the Rebels and finished his rookie season with seven points in 40 games. He returned for 2018–19 and set new career highs in goals, assists, and points. The 2019–20 season, shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, saw him set further career highs with 18 goals and 51 points in 63 games. During the 2020–21 season, he and his teammates lived in the Westerner Park Centrium due to the pandemic, and in March 2021 he was named an alternate captain. In his final season with the Rebels, he led the WHL in scoring with 43 goals and 69 assists, becoming the first player of South Asian descent to win the Bob Clarke Trophy. On March 11, 2022, he signed an entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks. After training camp, he was assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks for 2022–23 and scored his first professional goal in his first AHL game. By January 3, 2023, he had 13 points in 24 games. He made his NHL debut on February 20, 2024, in a 3–1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, becoming one of four Punjabi players to play in the NHL.
