Publication history
Shannon Appelcline noted that White Wolf expanded the World of Darkness into live action role-playing with Mind's Eye Theatre: The Masquerade in 1993, though the game itself was published in 1994. Mark Rein•Hagen had considered LARPs since Ars Magica, but this was his first published design. The Masquerade was highly successful and attracted many new players, including a larger proportion of women than earlier role-playing games. The adventure The Elder's Revenge appeared in 1995, and the sourcebook Liber des Goules: The Book of Ghouls was released in 1997.
Reception
Roger Spendlove reviewed The Masquerade in White Wolf #37, rating it 4 out of 5, and wrote that while the game might appeal mainly to experienced gamers, the Mind's Eye Theatre system had potential across genres. Derek Pearcy reviewed it in Pyramid #4, stating the game was well executed with graphic design consistent with earlier Vampire products, and that playing with the right group or at conventions could be exhilarating. He also noted that players could ignore the rules if they wished.
