Before turning professional, he played at the University of Wisconsin, where he served as captain of the national champion 2005–06 team and assisted on both goals in the 2–1 title-game victory over Boston College. He scored his first NHL goal on January 22, 2008, and two seasons later won the Stanley Cup with Chicago. On July 1, 2010, he left the Blackhawks as a free agent and signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars worth $1.15 million per year. After that deal expired, he signed a four-year contract with the San Jose Sharks on July 1, 2012, at $1.8 million per year, reuniting with former Wisconsin teammate Joe Pavelski. Burish underwent back surgery on October 17, 2013, and was placed on injured reserve. During the 2014–15 season, he was placed on waivers by the Sharks on November 21, 2014, and assigned to the Worcester Sharks of the AHL. On January 14, 2015, he was acquired via loan by the Chicago Wolves. After the season, on June 19, 2015, the Sharks bought out the final year of his contract, making him a free agent. Unable to secure another NHL deal, he left North America and signed his first contract abroad for the 2015–16 season, playing for the Växjö Lakers and Malmö Redhawks of the Swedish Hockey League.
