AVIC WZ-8
Hypersonic reconnaissance drone air-launched from an H-6M mothership.
Last updated
The AVIC WZ-8 is a hypersonic, remotely piloted drone built for high-altitude reconnaissance. It was publicly unveiled during China’s 70th anniversary military parade and later displayed at the 2021 Zhuhai Airshow.
The drone is designed for strategic surveillance across Southeast Asia, with a focus on Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. It cannot launch independently; instead, a Xi’an H-6M bomber serves as its mothership, releasing the drone once the bomber reaches the required speed and altitude. After release, the WZ-8 ignites its rocket motors to reach operational speed and altitude.
Design and development
The drone’s intended roles include general reconnaissance, pre-attack target assessment, and intelligence gathering. Its sensors reportedly include electro-optical imaging and synthetic-aperture radar. Some analysts suggest it could be weaponized to support anti-access/area denial strategies.
According to the manufacturer, the WZ-8 can achieve supersonic speeds at a cruising altitude of 50,000 meters, in near-space. U.S. intelligence reports have depicted it operating at Mach 3 and 100,000 feet over Taiwan or the Yellow Sea. Such sustained high-altitude, high-speed flight would allow it to fill intelligence gaps when satellite support is unavailable, such as repeated passes over specific areas.
Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology assessed that the drone’s primary target is not Taiwan but U.S. military bases in the Pacific, calling it an anti-access/area denial weapon. Dean Cheng of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies noted that the aircraft is a concern not only for the United States and South Korea but also for Japan, India, and all of Southeast Asia.
Operational history
Satellite images first spotted the WZ-8 at Chinese Air Force experimental test bases. A 2023 leak of classified U.S. documents revealed that China had “almost certainly” established its first supersonic UAV unit operating the WZ-8 at Liu’an Airbase in Dushan County, outside Lu’an. This base falls under the Eastern Theater Command, responsible for operations against Taiwan and in the East China Sea.
The leaked report stated the drone’s sensors could gather intelligence on Taiwan and western South Korea. The drone was also reportedly deployed at Anqing Airbase in 2021. By 2023, U.S.
