History

Moosh and Twist met in first grade at The Philadelphia School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they quickly connected over a shared passion for sports and music. During their school years, they played drums and piano together. One of their elementary school principals taught them the fundamentals of recording when they were young, and they jokingly call him their first engineer. They began rapping and creating music in seventh grade, but it wasn’t until around 2009, when they were in tenth grade, that they started taking it seriously. Though they attended different high schools—Haverford High School and Friends Select School—they stayed close. The duo originally performed under the name OCD: Moosh and Twist, adding “OCD” because they were obsessed with music; they later dropped that prefix.

On March 7, 2011, while still in high school, they released their debut mixtape, Up Before the World. They posted several music videos on YouTube, but the one that gained the most traction was for “City Kids,” directed by Rex Arrow, who was well-known for his work with Mac Miller. In June 2011, XXL featured them in its “The Break” section. Their second mixtape, The Welcome Mat, came out on September 25, 2011. They followed that with The Vestibule on January 3, 2012. The title came from a line in Moosh’s verse on their earlier song “Black Forest Gummy Worms.” Twist explained that the name reflects a transitional phase—standing at the door, then moving into the vestibule, close to breaking through but not yet fully inside. After graduating high school, they decided to skip college and focus on music full-time. On March 12, 2013, they released their fourth mixtape, Back to the Basement, which included production from DK and Logic’s in-house producer 6ix. In October 2013, they joined Hoodie Allen on the Party With Your Friends Tour.
