Ultraman Zearth
A parody Ultraman who cleans Earth and transforms with an electric toothbrush.
Ultraman Zearth is a fictional character from the Ultra Series of tokusatsu, and the name of a 1996 movie in that series. He serves as a parody of Ultraman. Zearth comes from the Land of Pikari, located in Nebula Z95. He has a large red face and strongly dislikes dirt, going to great lengths to wash it off his hands. His mission is to clean up the polluted Earth. To transform, he uses an electric toothbrush, which fits with his obsession with hygiene. He is not very skilled at being a superhero, but he always gives his best effort. His human form is Katsuto Asahi, who shares Zearth’s aversion to dirt.
The first movie, *Ultraman Zearth*, came out in 1996 to mark the 30th anniversary of the original Ultraman. It was part of the Ultraman Wonderful World series, alongside *Revive! Ultraman* and *Ultraman Company*. Zearth’s film appearances include *Ultraman Zearth* (March 9, 1996) and *Ultraman Zearth 2: Superhuman Big Battle - Light and Shadow* (April 12, 1997). The second movie was paired with the Ultra Nyan short titled *Ultra Nyan: Hatching from the Space Egg*.
Several characters from the original Science Patrol make cameo appearances. Arashi appears as a helicopter reporter, a role similar to his real-life career. In the first film, Hayata works as a janitor, holding his flashlight like a Beta Capsule. In the second film, he appears as an ordinary citizen trying to transform into Ultraman using a spoon, echoing his performance in episode 34. The first film also features a cameo by Arashi, but Fuji, Ide, and Captain Muramatsu do not appear in the first movie. In *Ultraman Zearth 2*, Ide appears as a photographer, and Captain Muramatsu as a fisherman. The second movie also features a rare cameo by Jiro Dan, who played Hideki Go in *The Return of Ultraman*, as a telecast reporter on TV.
The second film introduces “Digital Kanegon,” a take on the original Kanegon from *Ultra Q*. It also includes Kohji Moritsugu (Dan Moroboshi from *Ultra Seven*) as Captain Ban Satsuma. A running joke involves him frequently letting slip that he knows the audience recognizes him as Mr. Moritsugu or Dan Moroboshi or Ultraseven.
