KeyRus was a DOS-based terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) driver for keyboard and display, developed in 1989 by Dmitry Gurtyak, a student and hacker from Donetsk. Distributed at no cost, it spread widely within the USSR and internationally, mainly through electronic bulletin boards and Nikolai Bezroukov’s Softpanorama electronic magazine. The driver loaded fonts into EGA/VGA graphics and allowed users to switch keyboard layouts. Initially limited to toggling between Russian and Latin, later versions became more configurable, and the distribution included separate editors for layouts and fonts. Subsequent releases employed a novel font compression technique: bitmaps were stored in memory in a packed state and unpacked only when loaded into the graphics adapter, minimizing the driver’s footprint in DOS’s constrained memory space. The final version of KeyRus appeared in 1994. Gurtyak died in 1998 at age 27 from a soft tissue sarcoma.
