History

In the 20th century, folklorist and choir conductor Dmytro Balatsky recorded and edited the song. It was released on gramophone record in 1935 by the State Honored Choir Chapel of Ukraine 'Trembita' under Nestor Horodovenko. That same year, the Red Army Choir under Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov also performed it. The work was later arranged for military orchestras, including Simon Chernetsky's 'Ukrainian March'. In the 1970s, a version by the Kuban Cossack Choir with the refrain 'Marusya once, two, three viburnums' became widely known, though the original lacked this refrain.
