Gameplay
The core combat in Advanced Warfighter 2 remains similar to its predecessor, emphasizing tactical engagement over arcade-style shooting. Players command friendly units including squad members, drones, tanks, and aircraft, with weapons based on real models or hypothetical prototypes. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are largely alike, while the Windows version introduces distinct gameplay differences. A new Crosscom 2.0 system provides an information interlink between all friendly units, allowing a full-screen view from any unit's perspective and direct control over some units like the MULE Drone. New features include sub-machine guns as secondary weapons, a medic in the squad, and additional controllable units such as a two-man Loyalist squad, a Little Bird attack helicopter, and Far Support (airstrikes on consoles, mortar or artillery support on Windows). The Eternal Eyes feature improves direction of friendly units, and squad AI has been enhanced so members actively seek cover and call out targets.
Plot
After the defeat of Carlos Ontiveros and Aguila 7, instability in Mexico spreads across Latin America, closing the Panama Canal due to insurgency. Captain Scott Mitchell and his Ghost team are ordered back to Mexico, where rebels under Juan de la Barrera are believed to be planning an attack on the United States from Ciudad Juárez, possibly using a dirty bomb. Because the U.S. Congress has refused further military action and treaty boundaries restrict operations, the Ghosts deploy covertly. Mitchell's team assists Mexican Army loyalists led by Colonel Jimenez in attacking rebel positions. General Joshua Keating and Lieutenant Barnes learn that de la Barrera has acquired three smuggled Ukrainian Red Star IV nuclear warheads, intended for stolen Pakistani Kashmira-II missiles. After securing a supermarket, a warhead detonates in its basement, killing many loyalists and irradiating the area. The Ghosts and Jimenez's forces rescue a Mexican journalist for information, but their Black Hawk is shot down, forcing them to leave Lieutenant Rosen behind. The team later raids a hacienda to destroy the wreckage and recover Rosen, preventing the rebels from using evidence of American involvement.
Reception
Reviews were generally favorable, though the Windows version received lower scores than the console versions. GameRankings and Metacritic gave the PlayStation 3 version 86.59% and 84 out of 100, the Xbox 360 version 86.46% and 86 out of 100, the PC version 77.15% and 76 out of 100, and the PSP version 62.38% and 61 out of 100. The game was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design at the 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. It sold 1 million copies on Xbox 360 as of April 26, 2007, and was named Game of the Month by Game Informer for May 2007. Controversy arose when the Mayor of Ciudad Juárez criticized the game for scaring tourists, and Chihuahua's governor condemned it as insulting Mexico, calling for seizure of the game if sold on Mexican soil.
