Gameplay
In tournament mode, you start with only Team Heroes, but you can unlock other squads by playing through multiple times. Once you beat all the dream teams, the final match is against a clone of your own team. Every team has eight members, but only seven can take the court. You set positions, putting four players in the inner court and three on the outer court. Each character has stats for Throw Power, Throw Speed, Throw Control, Agility, Jump, Catch, Dodge, Toughness, Will, and Stamina. Every character has two special attacks: one done by running and throwing on the third step, and another by doing a running jump and pressing a button. There are 50 special moves total. Tag team attacks, a feature from Kunio-kun no Dodgeball Dayo Zen'in Shūgō, let multiple characters jump into the opposing inner court for extra damage. The teams in Bakunetsu Dodgeball Fighters were originally all Japanese, but Super Dodge Ball Advance gives them mixed nationalities. You can rename any team and set the nationality for Team Heroes. Team Heroes has Ken as captain, with Tom, Paul, Ben, Neal, Fred, David, and Jack. The China Dragons are led by Lee, with Chen, Lian, Chao, Wang, Tsai, Mao, and Dung. The England Knights have James as captain, plus Harry, Scott, Henry, Roger, Peter, Cliff, and Goaty. The USA Braves are captained by Sam, with John, Mike, Randy, Bill, Steve, Jim, and Dick. The Australia Stars are led by Chad, with Will, Miles, Todd, Ted, Bobby, Colin, and Dude.
Reception
Super Dodge Ball Advance received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic. IGN praised the core elements but found the game overly complex compared to the NES entry. GameSpot noted the game was fast, colorful, and fun, but considered the two-player mode rushed and the single-player mode repetitive. Nintendo World Report praised the multiplayer, music, and artwork, while criticizing the lack of options, single-player replayability, shallow gameplay, and repetitive enemies. NextGen cited the gameplay and controls as high points. GamePro's Uncle Dust praised the graphics, controls, and variety of challenges in single-player mode.
