Gameplay

The player controls a dog or cat through environments while completing tasks, similar to The Dog Island. Before starting, the player chooses the animal's breed, gender, and name, none of which affect gameplay. Locomotion includes walking, running, creeping, and pushing rocks. Hostile animals such as snakes, gorillas, and bats hurt the player if approached too closely; when an enemy attacks, the mood bubble above its head changes. The player begins with 3 HP, upgradeable to 8 at certain points; losing all HP forces a restart from the last save point. Enemies can be stunned by barking or meowing behind them (held for a longer howl in the dog's case) or by throwing pebbles. Friendly non-playable characters have bubbles indicating they need help. The game features 14 locales, including Dolphin Coast, Lappy Lake, and Whisker Woods, not all open initially. The Warp Ring, earned from the player's father Arvin, allows free warping between six locales via a magical stone. Each area has independent hazards like a poisonous lake, overheating, or tornadoes. Some areas host zoo animals challengeable in mini-games like soccer and sprint to return them to South Pawville's zoo. South Pawville serves as a central hub with no traveler's inn or shop; all purchases and full healing occur there.

Plot

The player character lives in South Pawville on a large island. Their father Arvin owns the Magic Hat, a family inheritance with powerful magic. The player's best friend Victor suggests investigating an evil wolf named Ivlet jailed at North Pawville's police station. Sheriff Ada warns against approaching Ivlet, who sleeps during the day, leading Victor to propose a night visit. Ivlet tricks the player into giving him the Magic Hat, empowering him to destroy both Pawvilles and make wild animals hostile. Ada jails the player, but Augusta frees them, saying the player must take responsibility by helping townsfolk; Victor offers to take the player's place. Outside, the player meets Beat, the Magic Hat's good side, who asks for help retrieving the hat. After aiding all townsfolk, Arvin directs the player to assist Theophilus, a wizard in Sky Heights, against Ivlet. Theophilus explains the hat turns black if used for evil, corrupting its user. To suppress its power, the player collects three crystals for the Magic Shield: Water, Earth, and Ice. Theophilus sends the player to find his brother Bartholomew at Gongoro Peak. The two wizards plan an attack on Ivlet in an astral dimension, inviting the player. They defeat Ivlet and the dragon he summons. Beat enters the Magic Hat, returning it to normal color, and the player returns home. Arvin decides to pass the Magic Hat to the player.
