Plot

The year is 930, one thousand years after an ancient civilization fell. Special individuals called Cyframe users, or adventurers, explore ruins using ancient tools known as Cyframes, taking jobs from the Society research institute. Some ruins contain hieroglyphics describing a powerful Cyframe named Evolutia, which many parties, including the Launcher family and the army, seek.

Major characters

Mag Launcher is the only child of the renowned Launcher family, living in his parents' mansion west of Pannam Town. He dreams of becoming a famed adventurer like his father Asroc, who disappeared while adventuring and never returned. The Launcher family has fallen into debt. Linear Cannon follows Mag on his adventures; she arrived at the Launcher home three years before the game's events with a letter from Mag's father asking Mag to protect her. Initially afraid of everything, she felt safer after Mag gave her an Ocarina. Linear is shy and silent but possesses mysterious healing powers, and is later revealed to be Evolutia, the god of evolution. After defeating Eugene, she begins to speak, addressing only Mag, with short sentences. Gre Nade is the Launcher family butler, charged by Asroc with watching over Mag and Linear. He is strict but skilled with money, a master chef, and an excellent rifle shot; he takes no money when chosen for a dungeon. Pepper Box is a wild adult adventurer with a bazooka-like Cyframe, a beautiful and flirtatious blonde who takes almost half the prize money when completing a dungeon. Chain Gun is a young girl from a family rival to the Launchers; brash and conceited, she is secretly infatuated with Mag. Raised as a tomboy because her parents wanted a male heir, she takes a small portion of the prize money when completing a dungeon.

Re-release

Evolution Worlds features newly recorded English voice acting for both games, whereas the first Evolution had no spoken dialogue and the sequel had a Japanese voice track. The Linear Watch was removed due to the absence of the Dreamcast's Visual Memory Unit. The first part is heavily trimmed, eliminating almost all dungeon crawling and condensing the plot into fewer but longer cutscenes due to limited disc space.
